Russell T. Davies

Published by rmarek under Uncategorized Edit This

Davies is one of my favorite writers.

I will miss him on the Doctor Who series.  Davies brought so much depth and emotion to the stories that I can’t imagine someone filling his shoes.  He also wrote for The Sarah Jane Adventures.  Every time I watch a story he wrote, I can see his influence.  Davies can make me weep with character connection.  He focuses on the core elements of human desire: love, home, and family.  I admire his writing and aim to be on his level.

Thank you, Mr. Davies for an amazing run with Doctor Who.  I look forward to your future work.

Creativity and Mental Health

Published by rmarek under Uncategorized Edit This

I know these two areas greatly.  People have suspected that a person with great creativity lends to a mind of mental unstable nature.  Parts of me agree, but parts of me hope for a different perspective. Being a creative individual, I have struggled with depression.  Truthfully, I’m just coming back from a bad patch.  This last time was the worst I ever had.  I questioned seeking dire help.  In my mind, it played out like a film with me rocking back and forth in a padded locked room.  Terrible, I know.  But I’m being honest here and that’s what is important.  We need to talk and be open about this topic.  Everyone needs support and validation.  Now that I’m back on a positive track and have managed to adjust my mind, perhaps I can return to creating.

Threshold Guardians

Published by rmarek under Uncategorized Edit This

As a writer, we encounter many threshold guardians throughout our stories and even in our lives. Who has been your threshold guardian?Perhaps you were a troublemaker in school and the teacher who does things “his way” decides to teach you some lessons.  Or maybe you were the cocky football jock who thought his coach was holding him back.Every story… every life… has threshold guardians. It’s my job to find them, explore their minds, and write their story. If you ever meet a writer, he/she is assessing and analyzing all the elements which formed your life.  We can’t help it.  People are our love.

Life Through A Screenwriter’s Eyes

Published by rmarek under Uncategorized Edit This

As I explore during the day, I always come across something or someone who would be perfect for a story.  I try to remember each and every detail but the feeling is really more important.  For example…

INT. HAIR SALON - RECEPTION

Rachel walks into an old salon from the 80’s.  The florescent lights have a hazy grey tone.

She looks around to the motionless faces and dusty cheap metal blinds.

INT. SHAMPOO AREA

Several shampoo bowl stations are lined up against a wall.  Soap scum is spreading out from the cracks between the facets and trash oozes out of a container.

Rachel enters.

She breaks into laughter at the sight.

Sure, one person may have vomited.  I almost did.  But then, I laughed.

It’s All About The Words

Published by rmarek under Uncategorized Edit This

FADE IN:

Every film begins with the simple words.  The creative mind of a writer envisions a world full of life with characters waiting eagerly for a chance to appear.  We struggle along with our story to find just the right word or just the right phrase.  At the end of our journey, with frazzled hair and a look of homelessness, we have finally completed our feature length screenplay.

I am a screenwriter.

We all love our craft or else we would go mad in the world of film.  It is time to reveal the thoughts and impressions of film through a screenwriter’s perspective.

Enjoy my posts and discuss in the comments!
